The CoC, based on SANS 10142, applies only to the selection and installation of electrical equipment, appliances, and accessories that are part of the fixed electrical installation, including plugs, light switches, cable selection, and distribution boards.

It does not cover the construction or safety of the appliances themselves. Those are regulated under other standards.

The CoC confirms that circuits supplying fixed appliances are compliant but does not cover the appliances themselves. Examples include:

• Stoves and geysers
• Air conditioners and refrigeration units
• Power-generating equipment (PCE)
• Pool pumps and similar devices

A CoC may be considered invalid if:

• Current regulations were not fully followed.
• Required corrections were not completed before the certificate was issued.
• The contractor's registration is not up to date.
• The electrician is not registered with the Department of Labour.

The inverter, batteries, and solar panels themselves are not included in a standard CoC. However, the installation must comply with SANS 60364-7-712 and be tested before a Solar or SSEG CoC can be issued.

Regulations change over time. For example, geyser circuits previously did not require wiring through an earth leakage device. Today this is mandatory, and older installations may need to be upgraded to meet current standards.

Just because an installation works does not mean it is compliant or safe.

Examples of non-compliant installations include:

• Extension cords permanently wired to garage motors
• Lighting circuits installed using speaker wire or other unsuitable cables

Even if they function, they do not meet safety regulations.

Yes. Any cabling or wiring that does not comply with current regulations must be removed or corrected to ensure the installation meets safety standards.
